Manchester Arena blast: 19 dead and about 50 hurt

Nineteen people have been killed and about 50 injured in a suspected terror attack at Manchester Arena.

The blast happened at about 22:35 BST on Monday following a pop concert by the US singer Ariana Grande.

The cause is unknown but PM Theresa May said her thoughts were with those affected by “what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack”.

British Transport Police said the explosion was in the arena’s foyer.

Greater Manchester Police has established an emergency telephone number in response to the attack. It is: 0161 856 9400.

The prime minister has suspended her general election campaigning and will chair a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee later, in response to the attack.

Mrs May said: “We are working to establish the full details” of what had happened in Manchester.

“All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected,” Mrs May said.

BBC Home Affairs Correspondent Daniel Sandford said senior counter-terrorism officers were assembling in London and liaising with the Home Office.

Unconfirmed reports from two unnamed US officials suggested the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.

The BBC’s Tim Ashburner, who is at the scene, spoke to some volunteer paramedics who treated the injured for “shrapnel-like injuries”.

The leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, tweeted: “Terrible incident in Manchester. My thoughts are with all those affected and our brilliant emergency services.”

Greater Manchester metro mayor Andy Burnham said: “My heart goes out to families who have lost loved ones, my admiration to our brave emergency services. “A terrible night for our great city.”

Shortly after the blast Manchester Victoria station, which is close to the concert venue, was closed and all trains cancelled.

Greater Manchester Police carried out a precautionary controlled explosion in the Cathedral Garden area of the city at about 01:32. The force confirmed it was not a suspicious item.

‘Screaming and running’

A number of eyewitnesses have described the confusion in the aftermath.

Andy Holey, who had gone to the arena to pick up his wife and daughter who had been at the concert, said: “As I was waiting, an explosion went off and it threw me about 30ft from one set of doors to the other set of doors.

“When I got up I saw bodies lying on the ground. My first thought was to go into the arena to try to find my family.

“When I couldn’t find them, I went outside with the police and fire and looked through some of the bodies to try and find my wife and daughter.

“I managed to find them eventually and they’re OK.

“It was definitely an explosion and it was some force. It happened near the box office at the entrance to the Arena.”

Emma Johnson said she and her husband were at the arena to pick up her children, aged 15 and 17.

“It was definitely a bomb. It was definitely in the foyer,” she told BBC Radio Manchester.

“We were stood at the top of the stairs and the glass exploded – it was near to where they were selling the merchandise.

“The whole building shook. There was a blast and then a flash of fire afterwards. There were bodies everywhere.”

At the scene: Tom Mullen BBC News

The police activity around the arena has been huge. There are blue flashing lights and cordons seemingly on almost every street corner.

A wide area around the venue itself has been completely taped off, and the crime scene appears to be widening, with police pushing people further and further back.

I’ve spoken to people who are shaken, scared and often tearful. One thing that’s apparent is there are many, many young people, some of them with parents or guardians. One mother told me her priority was simply to get her daughters home.

Other people have been more candid and have described seeing people covered in blood, or being treated by paramedics. There’s still a huge sense of confusion and people are constantly searching for information while letting their families know they’re safe.

Josh Elliott, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, said he was shocked by news of the fatalities.

“A bang went off and everyone stopped and screamed… we basically hit the deck,” he said

“It was bedlam… it was horrific.

“We got up when we thought it was safe and got out as quickly as possible.

“People were just crying and in tears… police cars were everywhere.

“We just wanted to get out as quickly as possible because we didn’t know what was going on.”

Manchester Arena, formerly known as the MEN Arena, is the biggest indoor venue in the city with a capacity of around 18,000 for concerts.

The arena foyer connects with Victoria train and tram station, a major hub on the northern edge of the city centre.

The arena regularly hosts concerts by major stars like Ariana Grande – a 23-year-old American TV teen actress-turned-pop star.

She’s a big draw for young fans, with hits including Problem, featuring Iggy Azalea, which hit number one in the UK in 2014; and Side To Side, featuring Nicki Minaj, which reached number four last year.

She’s currently on a European tour – she’s already played Birmingham and Dublin and is due to be at the O2 Arena in London on Wednesday and Thursday.

Michelle Sullivan, from Huddersfield, was attending the concert with her daughters, aged 12 and 15.

“It was really scary,” she said. “Just as the lights have gone down we heard a really loud explosion… Everybody screamed.

“When we got out they just said ‘keep on running, keep on running’.”

Within an hour of reports of the incident emerging, people began offering spare rooms and beds to people stranded in the city using the hashtag #RoomForManchester.

Hundreds of tweets offering places to stay are being shared and re-tweeted thousands of times.

Pat Carney, Manchester City Council’s spokesman for the city centre, said the city’s thoughts were with the families of those killed and injured.

“It’s a very easy target – a concert hall where young people are enjoying music,” he said.

“The public are really co-operating by staying away from what is basically now a crime site.

“The world we live in, police and the council have emergency procedures that we practise all the time.

“Obviously everyone in the city is shocked, having seen how young some of these people are

“The police are treating it as a live site, we don’t know if this is the end or there are other incidents in that area… we don’t know at the moment.”

Explosion, Panic and Death at Ariana Grande Concert in England

MANCHESTER, England — An explosion that may have been a suicide bombing killed at least 19 people on Monday night and wounded dozens at an Ariana Grande concert filled with adoring adolescent fans in what the police were treating as a terrorist attack.

Panic and mayhem seized the crowd at the Manchester Arena as the blast reverberated through the building, just as the show was ending and pink balloons were dropping from the rafters in a signature flourish by Ms. Grande, a 23-year-old pop star on an international tour.

Traumatized concertgoers — including children separated from parents — screamed and fled in what appeared to be the deadliest episode of terrorism in Britain since the 2005 London subway bombings.

Prime Minister Theresa May said her thoughts were with the victims and their families in “what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack.”

There was no immediate word from the police on the precise cause of the blast but unconfirmed reports said it was possibly a suicide bomber who had detonated a nail-filled explosive device.

The scene immediately evoked the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015, which included a deadly assault inside the Bataclan concert arena where the Eagles of Death Metal had been playing. But unlike the Bataclan victims, the Manchester concert was filled with young teenagers.

“This is currently being treated as a terrorist incident until the police know otherwise,” the Manchester police said in a Twitter post.

People at the concert at the Manchester Arena said they had heard what sounded like explosions at the end of the show, around 10:30 p.m.

At least one explosion went off in the foyer of the arena, according to the British Transport Police, the force that protects Victoria Station, the train terminus next to the arena. The terminal was evacuated.

Early on Tuesday morning, Sky News reported that a bomb disposal team had arrived on the scene as part of the investigation and that the security cordon around the arena had been widened.

Gary Walker, who was at the show with his wife and two daughters, said he “heard a massive bang and saw a flash” just as the concert concluded. He turned and realized that his wife had been hurt. Mr. Walker, who is from the northern city of Leeds, said she had a stomach wound and possibly a broken leg. He said he lay down with her and saw “metal nuts on the floor.”

Ms. Walker was taken to a hospital, and Mr. Walker was standing with his daughters at Deansgate, the main shopping street in Manchester.

Another concertgoer, Sasina Akhtar, told The Manchester Evening News that there had been an explosion at the back of the arena after the last song. “We saw young girls with blood on them,” she said. “Everyone was screaming, and people were running.”

Ms. Grande, 23, a singer with a big voice who started her career as a star on a Nickelodeon TV series, is on an international tour supporting her 2016 album, “Dangerous Woman.” Two additional acts, Victoria Monét and Bia, performed as openers on Monday. The tour was scheduled to continue on Thursday at the O2 Arena in London.

“Ariana is O.K.,” Ms. Grande’s publicist, Joseph Carozza, said before the enormity of the episode was widely known. “We are further investigating what happened.”

TMZ, the entertainment news website, said Ms. Grande was reported to be “in hysterics” over the deadly blast.

Parents separated from their children during the mayhem were told to go to a Holiday Inn, where many children had taken refuge. Local residents offered stranded concertgoers places to stay in their homes.

The confusion and fear in the hours afterward was reflected on social media. One Twitter post asked: “Did anybody see my girlfriend? I lost her in the chaos.”

The BBC interviewed one witness who was waiting outside the arena to pick up his wife and daughter. He recounted that the “whole building shook,” that there was “carnage everywhere,” and that the explosion appeared to come from near the stadium’s ticket area.

Videos posted on Twitter showed concertgoers running and screaming. Hannah Dane, who attended the performance, told The Guardian that she had heard “quite a loud explosion.”

She added, “It shook, then everyone screamed and tried to get out.”

The Greater Manchester Police said in a statement, “There are a number of confirmed fatalities and others injured.”

The Manchester Arena, opened in 1995, can hold up to 21,000 spectators; it was not clear how many people were in the crowd for the concert.

Karen Ford, a witness, told the BBC that she had been leaving the concert when the blast occurred. “Everyone was just getting out of their seats and walking toward the stairs when all of a sudden a huge sound, which sounded like an explosion, went off,” she said.

“Everyone tried to push people up the stairs,” she recalled, adding that in the chaos, people tried to push past a woman in a wheelchair as children screamed.

She said there was no smoke, just one very loud bang. “It was very, very loud,” she said, adding that her husband thought he had heard a second explosion. “There were shoes on the floor,” left behind by people who had fled, she recalled.

“Just chaos,” she said. “I was trying to tell people to calm down.” She added that the crush of people trying to flee created a perilous situation: “We were being crushed.”

Outside, Ms. Ford said, parents awaited children who had attended the concert, checking their smartphones in a panic. “Everyone was trying to find each other,” she said.

“ ’Bullshit is a greater enemy than lies’ lessons from three new books on the post-truth era

From Trumps phoney claims to the Brexit £350m a week for the NHS promise, we have become mired in a sea of bogus truths. But what can we do about it?Bullshit is having a moment. A spate of new books, including Newsnight presenter Evan Daviss Post-Truth: Why We Have Reached Peak Bullshit and What We Can Do About It, Buzzfeed correspondent James Balls Post-Truth: How Bullshit Conquered the World, and political journalist Matthew dAnconas Post Truth: The New War on Truth and How to Fight Back are all premised on the notion that we are in a new era.

What is that era? Thanks to among other things the democratising effect of the internet, the resultant decline in deference to experts, rising scorn for the political establishment, the tendency of social media to lock us in our echo chambers where our ill-founded opinions are confirmed rather than challenged, the blurring of fact and fiction online (a problem recognised in 1995 by the late journalist John Diamond who wrote: The problem with the internet is everything is true), we live in a post-truth era.

Video clip of Donald and Melania Trump failing to hold hands overshadows Israel arrival

The US first lady appears to brush off her husbands attempt to hold her hand as they arrive in IsraelDonald Trumps first official overseas trip as US president has produced yet another viral moment for the internet to obsess over.

As Trump and his wife, Melania, disembarked from Air Force One at Tel Aviv on Monday to begin their visit to Israel, the first lady appeared to brush away her husbands attempt to hold her hand. The action, caught in a video clip by Israeli news publisher Haaretz, has been widely shared on social media.

Despite pleading the Fifth Amendment, the Senate can still arrest Michael Flynn for contempt

Michael Flynn is pleading the Fifth in response to a subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to the Associated Press. But while that gets him off the hook from having to testify before the committee, it may represent merely the beginning of his legal troubles. Here’s Flynn’s problem. He’s not merely refusing to testify; he’s refusing to turn over relevant documents and the Fifth Amendment doesn’t automatically cover that. It’s still not yet entirely clear whether Michael Flynn is planning to turn over the subpoena’d documents to the Senate committee, even while invoking his Fifth Amendment right not to testify. But if he doesn’t turn over the documents, he’s arguably in violation of the subpoena; past case law is inconclusive (link). There is also a legal argument that Flynn might only be required to turn over documents that are already known to exist. But the Senate can hold Flynn in contempt over the documents if it chooses to, and if a judge agrees, he can be sent to jail for it.

In fact Flynn appears to be almost daring the Senate to have him arrested. So now we may be about to find out just how serious the Senate is when it comes to getting to the bottom of this matter. Donald Trump’s own Republican Party holds a slight majority in the Senate overall and on every Senate committee, but only a small handful of Republican Senators would need to vote for any given action alongside the Democrats for it to pass.

For that matter the Senate Intel Committee’s willingness to pursue the Trump-Russia scandal so thoroughly up to this point is a result of one Republican committee member, Susan Collins of Maine, having opted months ago to vote in favor of a serious investigation. The Republicans only have a one vote majority on the committee to begin with, and Collins single handedly tilted its balance of power. In a full Senate vote on contempt, only she and two other Republicans would need to vote yes for it to pass.

So if Michael Flynn keeps thumbing his nose on the subpoena’d documents, we’ll see if the Senate decides to simply let the FBI and Special Counsel deal with him instead or if Flynn ends up behind bars for contempt of Congress.

Trump seems to confirm Israel as source of intelligence shared with Russia

The US president, currently on the second leg of his first foreign trip, took a swipe at the media during off-the-cuff remarks alongside Israels prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

While speaking in Israel today, Donald Trump blurted out more classified intel about Israel

Donald Trump headed into Israel today with a number of dark clouds hanging over him and his troubled administration. But the most immediate cloud was the one involving Trump having given highly classified intelligence obtained from Israel to the Russians during an Oval Office meeting last week. So how did Trump handle the matter when he held a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today? He blurted out additional classified information.Trump seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding about the importance of what he leaked to begin with. Although he didnt tell the Russians that the be classified info had come from Israel, he revealed details that would have made it easy for Russia to trace the Tracy information back to Israeli intel assets. And so today Trump proudly chastised reporters to their faces over the fact that he never told the Russians the intel came from Israel.

But in so doing today, Donald Trump publicly revealed that the intel did come from Israel (link). That part was also classified. Oops.

So now weve got Donald Trump publicly revealing classified information while incorrectly bragging that he hadnt privately revealed classified information. And he did it while standing next to the prime minister of the ally who gave the United States the classified information to begin with. There are almost no words to describe how swiftly Trumps presidency is unraveling.

Trump Admin Declares Jerusalem Part of Israel in Major Policy Shift

The Trump administration declared the president is in “Jerusalem, Israel,” on Monday for a series of meetings with Israeli officials, a proclamation that breaks with years of American policy refraining from stating that the city of Jerusalem is part of Israel.Senior Trump administration officials had ignited a wave of controversy over the past several weeks when discussing Jerusalem, with some top officials refusing to say that the ancient city is part of Israel.

Decades of U.S. policy has refrained from formally labeling Jerusalem as part of Israel due to concerns this could negatively impact the Middle East peace process, in which Palestinian leaders have staked a claim to the city as their future capital.

Ahead of a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the White House, on its official website, provided a live stream of the event. Prior to its start, the White House included a frame stating, “President Trump gives remarks with Prime Minister Netanyahu.” The location provided was “Jerusalem, Israel.”

The statement appears to be part of an effort to normalize this language, which is widely backed by U.S. lawmakers and senior officials in the administration, sources said.

The State Department, which is disposed to address the issue with more caution, declined to comment on the latest declaration, instead referring a reporter to the White House. The White House did not provide comment on the matter by press time. Pro-Israel observers on Twitter and other social media immediately praised the declaration.

The Obama administration also faced its own controversies when dealing with the city. The former administration was caught altering official photographs to remove “Israel” as the location for several meetings. The effort roiled the pro-Israel community, but was in line with standing U.S. policy.

The Trump administration has faced its own struggles on the issue.

Candidate Trump vowed in multiple speeches on the campaign trail that he would move the U.S. embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the country’s capital.

While U.S. law states that the embassy should be moved, consecutive presidents have waived the requirement, claiming that it interferes with efforts to advance Middle East peace.

Trump’s administration has taken heat from the pro-Israel community for failing thus far to take concrete action on moving the embassy. While White House officials maintain that the plan is still being examined, the slow roll of the move has angered Trumps biggest pro-Israel supporters.

Trump administration officials also have issued a range of answers when pressed to explain whether they believe Jerusalem is part of Israel.

White House National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster last week would not tell reporters whether Israel’s holiest site, the Western Wall, is located in Israel proper.

The latest declaration on the issue by the Trump administration appears to show that the president is committed to affirming Israel’s sovereignty over the city and turning the page from years of chilly relations between the Israeli government and the United States under former President Barack Obama.

In joint remarks with Netanyahu, Trump emphasized his opposition to the landmark Iran nuclear deal, blaming the previous administration for inking a deal that has only emboldened the Islamic Republic.

Increased relations with Israel among some of its fiercest Arab enemies, including Saudi Arabia, have been sparked by Iran’s regional support for terrorism, Trump said.

A “lot of that progress has been made because of the aggression of Iran, it’s forcing people together in a very positive way,” Trump said. “It was a terrible, terrible thing for the United States to enter that deal, and believe me, Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, that I can tell you.”

The United States’s role in the nuclear deal “also gave them an ability to continue with terror,” Trump said. “No matter where we go, we see the signs of Iran in the Middle East.”

“No matter where we goSyria, where we were forced to shoot the 59 missiles,” he continued. “No matter what area we’re inYemen, Iraq, no matter where we are we see the signs whether it’s soldiers, whether it’s money and guns.”
