1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Democrats tip off that Michael Cohen’s testimony will be even more devastating to Donald Trump than we thought

Here’s the thing about Wednesday’s public House Oversight Committee testimony from Michael Cohen: much of it will focus on matters that Cohen already discussed privately on Tuesday with the Senate Intelligence Committee. We’ve spent the past day watching for clues from the members of that committee, and there are two that stand out rather remarkably.

The first clue came from Democratic Senator Mark Warner, the ranking member on the Senate Intel Committee. After he finished listening to Michael Cohen’s private testimony, he made this remark to a gang of reporters: “When this investigation started, I said it may be the most important thing that I’m involved in in my public life in the Senate. Nothing I have heard today dissuades me from that view.”

In other words, the mild mannered Warner is taking the already-high expectations for Michael Cohen’s public testimony, and making a point of ramping those expectations up even further. That’s significant, because it means that Warner sees Cohen’s accusations (and cooroborating evidence) against Donald Trump as being the real deal.

The second clue is that not a single Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee bothered to try to discredit Michael Cohen after the hearing, or to leak the specific accusations in the hope of disputing them. In other words, even Donald Trump’s allies on the committee appear to think Cohen’s evidence and testimony are so damning, they’re afraid to even try to defend Trump on it. Get your popcorn ready.

The North Korean leader is set to meet with the US president in Hanoi to discuss denuclearisation

Here are the president’s tweets since he landed in Vietnam 12 hours ago. In them, Trump has praised Vietnam and thanked its people for the “great reception” he has received, as well as suggesting North Korea could thrive in the same way as Vietnam “if it would denuclearize”, writing North Korea’s “potential is AWESOME”.

Just arrived in Vietnam. Thank you to all of the people for the great reception in Hanoi. Tremendous crowds, and so much love!

Vietnam is thriving like few places on earth. North Korea would be the same, and very quickly, if it would denuclearize. The potential is AWESOME, a great opportunity, like almost none other in history, for my friend Kim Jong Un. We will know fairly soon – Very Interesting!

The Democrats should stop talking about what I should do with North Korea and ask themselves instead why they didn’t do “it” during eight years of the Obama Administration?

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second summit between US president Donald Trump and North Korean chairman Kim Jong-un. The summit, which will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam over the next two days, follows the pair’s historic meeting in Singapore in June last year.

Donald Trump hailed the first summit as a great success, repeatedly saying that his discussions with Kim had averted a war between the two countries. Trump has also claimed that Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the North Korean leader.

In this second episode of the special Culper Partners Rule of Law Series, David Kris and Nates Jones, the founders of the Culper Partners consulting firm, speak with Eric Holder, who served as the 82nd Attorney General of the United States from 2009 to 2015.

Holder shares his perspective on the proper functioning of the Department of Justice, the balance between independence and political accountability, and a distinction between the role of the Attorney General as the chief prosecutor on the one hand and as legal advisor to the president, and sometimes to the National Security Council, on the other. He also remembers his own experience with congressional oversight and gives a frank assessment of how oversight is functioning today. He also critiques the two OLC opinions against indicting a sitting president, and he offers predictions about the Mueller report and his own upcoming decision on whether he will run for president.

1. Trump from Michael_Novakhov (197 sites): Palmer Report: Former Attorney General Eric Holder seems to think Donald Trump is about to get indicted

As it’s become more clear over the past year or two that Donald Trump would eventually be exposed in several felony scandals, numerous media pundits have insisted there was a binding Department of Justice policy preventing a sitting president from being indicted. But as Palmer Report has been pointing out the entire time, this was never anything more than a stray forty year old memo that never carried any legal weight. Now a former U.S. Attorney General is confirming that Palmer Report is correct.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder stated on Twitter this evening that “A sitting President can be indicted.” So why is this a big deal? As the former head of the Department of Justice, Eric Holder knows full well what does and does not qualify as precedent and/or policy at the DOJ.

Not only is Holder casting doubt on the legitimacy of the supposed policy that a sitting president can’t be indicted, he’s taking it further by flat out stating that a sitting president can be indicted. Holder is also well aware, that as a former U.S. Attorney General, his opinion on this matter carries a whole lot of unofficial legal weight.

The question of course is why Eric Holder is making a point of publicly weighing in on this issue right now. He appears to believe that question at hand, whether or not Donald Trump can be indicted while he’s still in office, is on the verge of no longer being a mere hypothetical. Michael Cohen is about to publicly expose more of Trump’s crimes tomorrow. Is Holder expecting an SDNY indictment against Trump thereafter?
